Mattco
Raceworks Tests for Team Compatibility at
Firebird
(Englewood Cliffs, NJ, December 21,
1998)- CART PPG Dayton Indy Lights top
American team, Mattco Raceworks, recently
tested several drivers and an engineer at
Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix,
Arizona. The team tested four drivers and
one engineer.
Mattco brought two of its winning Lola
Indy Lights cars, baselined by Mattco's
1998 driver, Chris Simmons. Mike
Borkowski (formerly of Team Rahal) and
Philip Peter (Dorricot Racing) split one
car, while Ryan Walker (F2000 competition)
and Paul Owens (European karting
experience) tested in another. Mark
Hotchkis' race winning engineer in
Fontana, Buddy Faye, was involved in the
testing process.
"This was a fact finding mission for
the engineers as well as the drivers,"
stated Team Manager, Ron Brown. "We
looked at how the drivers communicated
with the engineers and mechanics and vise
versa. Speed was not a major issue during
this test."
"Our plans for next year are still
being discussed, so this gives us the best
idea of who will be most compatible for us
no matter what our decision may be."
Mattco Raceworks' options for the 1999
season are still being weighed. The
decision to remain in Indy Lights, start a
Champ Car testing team or both will be
announced soon.
