Mattco Raceworks Gets First Win; Back to Back Podium Finishes

Brooklyn, MI, July 25, 1998-Mattco Raceworks, a PPG Dayton Indy Lights contender, earned its first long-awaited victory and back to back podium finish at The Detroit News 100 at the Michigan Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.

Tony Renna, 21, of DeLand, Florida, won the 50 lap suspense filled race from the pole position, driving the No. 77 Alco Capital Group/ The Nassi Group Lola, to its first win. Renna set the second quickest qualifying lap in Indy Lights history, by driving an average speed of 184.054 miles an hour in 39.119 seconds, and became the second youngest American driver to ever win an Indy Lights event.

"The car was so great," comments Renna. "The crew are the ones who really deserve this trophy. They paid attention to every detail and were at the track until 1:00 am to make sure the Alco Capital Group/ The Nassi Group car was perfect. I just drove it in the race. The car was literally that good. No one could even keep up with me without the help of the draft. All I had to do was let then get some clean air, and they would fall back behind me again."

"This win is amazing for so many reasons," says Renna. "First, it's my first Indy Lights win and Mattco's, as well. It means so much to me to give Matt (Cohen, Team Owner) his first Indy Lights win. The whole team worked so hard to put me here. I couldn't be more proud! Secondly, I had my first win at a Penske Track. I have been a huge fan since Danny Sullivan's "spin and win" at Indy. It makes this win so much more special."
Chris Simmons, 25, of East Granby, Connecticut, driver of the No. 78 Alco Capital Group/ The Nassi Group Lola, hot off of his first podium finish at last week's race, qualified sixth, but finished tenth. Simmons suffered a minor engine problem, which rendered him less power. Surprisingly, Chris was as high as second place, but failed to hold on due to his mechanical difficulties.

"I obviously wanted to do better, but with the scope of my problem, I think we faired well. I tried to use the draft to get our Alco Capital Group/ The Nassi Group car up front, but with the lack of power, I just couldn't do it. I am really grateful to the Mattco Raceworks crew for working so hard on the car. They were up all night long preparing it, and it's a shame we didn't place higher. Tony did a great job, and I'm happy we have our first win under our belts. It's the confidence boost we need to go to Trois-Rivieres."

I am really proud of both Chris and Tony," said Team Owner, Matt Cohen. "They both drove a clean smart race. Not only have the drivers done well, so have the crew. We have made a lot of changes to our team with in the last few weeks, and now the restructuring has come to light. This win is especially gratifying for our sponsors, Alco Capital Group and the Nassi Group. We've finally brought them the win they deserve. This is a weekend I will never forget!"

The next race on the PPG Dayton Indy Lights schedule is the Le Grand Prix Player's de Trois-Rivieres (The Player's Grand Prize of Three Rivers) in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. The race can be seen on Sunday, August 2, at 12:35 p.m. est or on ESPN 2 at 4:30 est.
